Also missing in works of literature for young people were urban settings. Yet none of these people of color appeared in the mainstream children’s books that were being published at that time. He was a man who’d spent much of his life in New York City, living among neighbors from a range of ethnic backgrounds. Keats started his career in children’s publishing in 1954, illustrating books written by authors other than himself.Īs an artist who had grown up surrounded by poverty and anti-Semitism, Ezra understood what it was like to be excluded.
